Short panel and long panel
Short panel doors have more, smaller rectangles and a traditional appearance. Long panel doors have fewer, wider rectangles, which reads as a little more contemporary and suits wide double doors.
Adding a row of windows to the top section brings daylight into the garage and breaks up the face of a large door.
Colours and finishes
White, almond, sandstone, brown and black are the standards, and many manufacturers offer wood grain finishes. A door colour that matches the trim tends to make the house look wider; a contrasting colour makes the door a feature.
If you live in an HOA community, the approved colour list is usually built around these standard shades, which keeps approval simple.
A sensible upgrade
Many production homes were built with a thin, single layer raised panel door. Replacing it with an insulated door in the same style keeps the look your neighbourhood expects, while making the door quieter, stiffer and cooler. See insulated garage doors.

Traditional Raised Panel door FAQs
Are raised panel doors out of style?
No. They remain the most installed door style because they suit so many homes. Long panel versions in dark colours look current.
Can I add windows to my existing door?
It is sometimes possible to replace a section with a windowed one, if the manufacturer still makes that door. Otherwise it is done as part of a new door.
