Modern Garage Doors

Modern garage doors rely on simple geometry: flat or lightly grooved surfaces, strong horizontal lines, and windows used as a design element instead of decoration. They suit contemporary new builds and are one of the quickest ways to update an older ranch or two story home.

What makes a door look modern

  • Flat or plank style panels with no raised rectangles.
  • Asymmetric windows. A vertical stack down one side, or a single horizontal band, in clear, frosted or tinted glass.
  • Restrained colour. Black, charcoal, bronze and white are the most requested, along with warm wood tones.
  • Minimal hardware. No decorative handles or strap hinges.

Materials and finishes

Most modern doors are insulated steel with a smooth or wood grain surface. Wood look finishes give the warmth of cedar or walnut without the refinishing that real wood needs in Texas sun. For a fully glazed look, see full view glass doors; for the plainest surface, see flush panel doors.

Dark doors on a west facing garage get very hot to the touch in summer. Insulated construction and a finish rated for sun exposure help the door stay flat and hold its colour.

Homes they suit

Modern doors are a natural fit for contemporary and Hill Country modern architecture with metal roofs, stucco and limestone. They also work well on mid-century ranch homes, where the long horizontal lines of the house are echoed in the door.

Are modern garage doors more expensive?

Not necessarily. A flush steel door in a standard colour is among the more affordable styles. Cost rises with wood look finishes, custom glass and larger sizes.

Can I get privacy with windows in the door?

Yes. Frosted, obscure and tinted glass let light in while hiding the garage interior.
